One of the farms I purchase wholesale flowers from is East of Eden Flower Farm in Bowdoinham, Maine.
I met Julia and David back in 2017 when I started working for Pretty Flowers. At the time, Julia was growing a variety of flowers on her land at Brown’s Point in Bowdoinham where she shared production and cooler space with Six River Farm. Julia and David were doing it all- growing a variety of flowers and foliage, selling wholesale, retail and designing weddings. They briefly took over Kennebec Flower Farm’s booth at the Brunswick Farmer’s Market when Chas and Linda Gill retired. Julia and David were doing so much- I wondered how it was even possible.
When they decided to start a family, they scaled everything back and streamlined their business model. After a brief hiatus, Julia and David reemerged. The had sold their land at Brown’s Point, bought a house with land on State Rd. and decided to focus of growing high value specialty flower crops: Tulips, Ranunculus, Peonies, Lisianthus and Dahlias. Julia also plans to diversify by adding more perennials: Lady’s Mantle, Nepeta, Yarrow and Daffodils. She will interplant them among the Peonies to maximize the space (see above photo). With the change in weather, growing annuals will become more and more challenging.
They also recently began leasing land across the street from their farm where they operate a small self-serve farm stand. They sell their flowers, Dahlia tubers, potted annuals and local produce grown by other farmers in the area. It’s worth a stop! Find them at 2 Sadie Lane, Bowdoinham . They’re open 10-6 from spring to fall.
I love “business” and am always inspired and intrigued by the decisions people make. Julia and David’s decision to pause and refocus their energy on 5 key crops was wise. Doing so, gave them more balance with their busy lives.
When you purchase flowers from Celadon Floral, you are supporting farmers like Julia and David.
